FA.GLOSSARY

NOTE: Glossary is edited and refined in parallel with Essay's contents. It is still incomplete. Terms in curly braces are defined further in the glossary, eg. {#Space}. -Observation or Event: {Dialectic Dichotomy} of Terms Subject/Object or Observer/Observandum. Observation may be imagined as a mirror in which Subject sees himself observing Object. Relativity of Observations makes them essentially Fuzzy (uncertain). -Detector: Physical Observations occur necessarily via some physical detector, which is an integral part of the Observation and contributes to its uncertainty. Even mental experiments have to take it always into account. -Einstein's Covering Principle: Physical distance is measured, also in mental experiments, with physical rods complying with physical rules, such as the Lorentz Contraction. In curved {#Space} the measuring rods embrace the local curvature. -Phenomenon, fundamental concept of Phenomenology: particular spatio-temporal structure of Events. -Aspects (of Phenomenon): Events composing it. -Noumenon, fundamental concept of Noumenalism: a "Thing" apparently underlying the Phenomenon and its Aspects; existing "in itself" independently of them. -Entity, basic linguistic and logical term, afflicted by the fundamental homonymy: synonym of Phenomenon or Noumenon respectively in Phenomenal or Noumenal Weltanschauung. -Attribute or Property: linguistic and logical synonym of Aspect. -Noumenalism considers Entity and Attribute as ontologically distinct constructs. Entity is a "Noumenon", a "Container", which may receive and "have" Attributes but exists as such, even empty and prior to receiving them. Kant called Noumenon "Ding an sich" ("thing in itself) and banned it from cognition and rationality. Noumenalism is nothing else than {Naive View} (aka "Naive Realism") dressed up in highbrow verbiage. -Copula: natural languages express Naive View with the noumenal statements predicating (assigning) Attributes to subject Entity with help of copula, usually the auxiliary pseudo-verb "be". Fallacious inflections of the copula result in empty-copular non-propositions like "all that is" and phantasms like "Being". They devastated Philosophy more than anything, muddling the underlying ideas and leading astray their explication. Eg: "Cogito Ergo Sum", Heidegger's "Sein und Zeit", Sartre's "L'Etre et le Neant". -Phenomenology considers Entity as structure of Attributes and nothing else. A single Attribute is a full-fledged Entity and "Entity void of Attributes" is for Phenomenology a nonsense. -Referential: Entity solidary with an Observer (a human or a technical detector). -Reference System: A system of coordinates associated with a Referential. NOTE: The concept of Referential is indispensable for imaginary creativity and understanding. Let's mention the role of spinning disk or free falling box in derivation of General Relativity. Imaginary referential precedes its mathematical formalization with help of some Reference Systems. After this formalization it still carries the gist of a Model, which should be understandable without mathematical details. We don't use the term "reference frame", misleading in its suggestion of some "container" of different nature than its contents. We try to introduce some order into the muddled terminology. Einstein himself did not care too much about metalanguage and used indiscriminately such terms as "reference system", "reference frame", "reference coordinates", "reference body", "reference object", etc. -Phenomenal Equivalence (P-Equivalence): Association of Aspects of a Phenomenon (Field Density and #Space curvature are P-Equivalent Aspects of the Phenomenon "Cosmos"). P-Equivalence is often confused with Causality. Its customary to say that "Field curves #Space", which is false, as they are both "equally ranked" Aspects of a Phenomenon, none causing the other. Continuous Field wave and Discrete photon are P-Equivalent Aspects of the Phenomenon "Light". While the P-Equivalence Field/#Space manifests the deepest physical Phenomenon "Cosmos", the fundamental Phenomenon of human Universe of Discourse, viz. "Awareness", manifests itself via its P-Equivalent aspects "Mind" and "Brain". -Polar Structure of Phenomenon: its apparently contradictory, but in fact complementary, P-Equivalent Aspects or Poles, eg a magnet. -Dialectic Dichotomy (short "Dichotomy"): synonym of Polar Structure, appropriate outside of Physics and "hard" disciplines. Terms of Dichotomy are synonyms of Poles. -Field: dynamic polar structure of Continuity and Discrete Singularities thereof, observable via forces it exerts on detectors. -Singularity taken in physical sense denotes vicinity area of mathematical singularity where Continuous Field formulas cease to hold. For communicability's sake we may use common language terms "thing", "particle", "matter", etc. always remembering that they denote Field Singularities. -#Space, abstract topological concept such as Riemann #Space, synonymous with "Domain" or "Class", sharply distinct from its unfortunate homonym, the "space" of direct perception. #Space and Field are structurally homomorphic and P-Equivalent. ( DERIVATION OF GENERAL RELATIVITY, Steps 1, 2 , last paragraph Field and #Space"). #Space is Metric when all its dimensions have the same measure. Metric #Space admits distance, angle and rotation. Non-metric or Affine #Space does not admit them. -Mind encompasses 3 Domains ( BAA.STRUCTURE OF MIND ): 1.Sensorium, Domain of 2D sensations, evoking Plato's shadows on cave's wall. 2.Imagery, continuous domain of 3D space Patterns of Images evolving in time, created from sensations by Morphogenetic faculty of Mind and appearing illusorily to awareness as "objects" of "reality". They evoke Plato's external Ideas projected into the Cave. 3.Symbolics or Abstractions, domain into which Images are mapped as discrete Symbols interrelated in symbolic structures such as languages and Logic. -Reflection, or Lateral Thinking comprises: 1.Symbolizing or Mapping Image Patterns into Symbolic or Abstract Structures. 2.Understanding, or recurring symbolic Structures to Imagery Patterns. -Meaning (of Symbolic or Abstract structure): its associated Imagery Pattern. -Phenomenon #Space (PS): Synonym of Imagery pertinent to scientific Modelss. It's unique per observer and Model independent. -Abstract #Space (AS): Synonym of Symbolics pertinent to scientific Models. -Transcendency: Hypothetical Territory, often called "reality" of which Imagery would be a Map. Rationality does not deny Transcendency only considers it inaccessible to cognition and, as such, excludes it from the rational Universe of Discourse. -Naive View: confusion of Imagery with Transcendency, often denoted by "Naive Realism". We avoide this latter term, as it seems to imply some opposite concept of non-naive "realism" whose meaning, if any, escapes us. -Extended Locality (E-Locality): Two PS Events are "locally related" when their AS projections are continuously transportable via a geodesic of Model's #Space to the same "location" or point of this #Space. "Locality" refers in our essay to "E-Locality", unless otherwise specified. Locality is Model dependent. -Causality: Given locally related Events A,B we shall say that they appear respectively as "Cause" and "Effect" if B has never been observed without A, while A might have been observed without B. Causality Relation transforms into Implication Relation of Model's AS. Thus, we consider Causality as covariant with Implication: to say "A is cause of B" is for us equivalent with "A implies B". -Encompassment: Entity consisting of a single Attribute A is more general than Entities AB, AC, ABC, etc., which it "encompasses" as its "sub-entities". In general, Entity consisting of a given structure of Attributes encompasses all Entities sharing this structure in addition to some other Attributes. Encompassment is a particular case of Implication. -Cognitive Network (CN): Symbolic network whose nodes are Entities or Statements and edges - Implications. It is the rational replacement of the naive, noumenal Logic in all its established shades. In the particular case of Implications reduced to Encompassment CN is the rational replacement of the naive, noumenal Set Theory in all its established shades. -Certainty: for the sake of consistency with Fuzzy Inference we replace the traditional "truth/falsity" variable with "Certainty" ranging over 0-1, discretely in exact and continuously in Fuzzy Inference. Extreme Certainty values 0 and 1 may be called respectively "falsity" and "truth", qualifying corresponding nodes as "false" and "true". -Inference, a "two-way" procedure encompassing Deduction and Induction scanning CN respectively top-down and bottom-up. -Deduction sets exact Certainty of CN nodes in function of their superior neighbors (deductive premises). Top nodes or "Presumptions" have no deductive premises and are granted as true. -Induction sets fuzzy Certainty of nodes in function of their inferior neighbors (inductive premises) and connecting operators. Bottom nodes lack inductive premises and have to be set by Observations or Facts. Inductive scan verifies or falsifies CN's nodes and, ultimately, its top Presumptions. -Theory: a deductively consistent CN instance, founded in its top Presumptions. -Axioms: factually controllable and falsifiable Presumptions of a Theory. -Dogma: Presumptions of a "dogmatic" Theory lacking bottom potential facts and thus not admitting inductive verification/falsification. -Model: a Theory bottomed by potential facts and founded 1.in Axioms, 2.in Continuum supporting Extended Locality and covariance of Causality-Implication.
